Dennis Leary - Life's Gonna Suck
Dennis Leary has a novel approach to facing life. For lack of our own understanding, let's just call it a sarcasti-realism. Amongst all the 'hope and smiles' of those trying to sell us on the latest 'here this will solve all your problems', click here, buy this book, do this seminar; and yes we accept paypal... It's refreshing to hear someone enlighten us to the other side of delusion, that little thing called 'reality'. Maybe Dennis has it right and the best way forward is accepting the truth rather than trying to hide from it in the latest self help craze; or the next wave of delusional thinking...
Think about it. We can get pretty frustrated with life. When these frustrations seem quite big, it can help to get a little perspective. In an odd way, this song does just that, and in a humorous manner.
Of course, reality and funny songs are two different things. Between ideals and wishful thinking, about how we would like things to be, and the basic reality of existence, that we can only to varying degrees have influence over..., we need to seek balance, accept the things we cannot change, and change the things we can. Whether or not we have the wisdom to know the difference remains an open question.
God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, And wisdom to know the difference.
In the mean time, no matter your background or belief, no matter your circumstance or situation, as challenging as it can be at times, if you are able to see this article on the internet, chances are that your situation is not as bad, as so many others that live in much more difficult circumstances.
Life's Gonna Suck
There are still places where warlords and water issues, as well as starvation and disease, are the rule of the day.
That does not mean that in our own context, we don't get frustrated and upset by the oddities of our reality. The unfair nature of things, the lack of justice, or wisdom, that is sometimes real or imagined, or merely victim to or of circumstance and perspective.
Our own perspective come built-in with our own bias. If we try to see past our bias, we might be able to overcome some of our frustrations... It remains, irony is pretty ironic and sometimes we should just step back and laugh at ourselves and our perceptions, take a deep breath, and try again.
And if you are still frustrated, play the video again...
Here's the short version with just the song:
Lyrics to Life's Gonna Suck, performed by Dennis Leary
Life's gonna suck when you grow up, when you grow up, when you grow up
Life's gonna suck when you grow up, when you grow up, it sucks pretty bad right now
Hey if you know the words, sing along
You're gonna have to mow the lawn, do the dishes, make your bed
You're gonna have to go to school until your 17
It's gonna seem about three times as long as that
You might have to go to war, shoot a gun, kill a nun
You might have to go to war when you get out of school
Hey cheer up kids it gets a lot worse
You're gonna have to deal with stress, deal with stress, deal with stress
You're gonna be a giant mess when you get back from the war
Santa clause does not exist and there's no easter bunny
You'll find out when you grow up that big bird isn't funny, funny, funny (laugh...)
Life's gonna suck when you grow up, when you grow up, when you grow up
Life's gonna suck when you grow up, it sucks pretty bad right now
You're gonna end up smoking crack, on your back, face the fact
You're gonna end up hooked on smack and then you're gonna die
And then you're gonna die...
